We are thrilled to announce that Tom Calvanese is joining the Oregon Kelp Alliance as our full-time Director, effective September 2025. After years of sharing Tom’s talents with Oregon State University, we’re excited to finally have him all to ourselves!
Tom brings a rare combination of scientific expertise and hands-on marine experience to this role. With a Master’s degree in Fisheries Science from Oregon State University and 15 years of coastal living on Oregon’s south coast, he has been leading the Oregon Kelp Alliance since 2019 while also serving as Field Station Manager at OSU’s Port Orford location. His unique background as a commercial urchin diver provides invaluable in-the-water insights into kelp forest dynamics, while his scientific training ensures our restoration efforts remain evidence-based and effective.
His passion for all things marine like kelp, urchin, and rockfish, brings excitement and energy to our amazing team of people here at ORKA. As Director, Tom will continue advancing our mission to restore and preserve Oregon’s vital kelp forest ecosystems through collaborative, science-based approaches. His deep roots in the Port Orford community and strong relationships with local commercial fishermen, urchin divers, and coastal stakeholders ensure that our conservation work aligns with the needs of working waterfront communities while protecting marine ecosystems.
Tom’s leadership has already earned recognition. He was recently named one of 25 Oregonians who inspired us in 2024 by the Oregonian. His ability to bridge the gap between marine science and practical conservation makes him uniquely positioned to guide our organization’s next chapter.
